About
Performing on modern trumpet and Steinway piano, Freeman-Attwood and Pienaar relish the opportunity to challenge the established interpretation of these works. They succeed by drawing on interpretative instincts, inclinations, and inflections gleaned from their wide performance experience, whilst deliberately referencing their accumulated knowledge of performance practices of the period.
Comprising mesmerizing dances, songs, fantasies and variations, this is a journey which re-ignites our appreciation and love for forgotten gems from the Elizabethan, Jacobean and Caroline worlds. This is another must-have recording in Freeman-Attwood’s critically acclaimed ‘boundary-busting’ series.
Jonathan Freeman-Attwood is the 14th Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, a post he has held since 2008. As a trumpet soloist he has released ten albums, the majority with Linn and pianist Daniel-Ben Pienaar; they have attracted wide critical acclaim for their musical originality and effective ‘re-imagining’ of repertoire. Most recently, these have included The Neoclassical Trumpet, which includes a re-working of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, and a recording of the world premiere of Fauré’s Vocalises.
Daniel-Ben Pienaar is garnering growing international recognition for his recordings, concert appearances and collaborations with Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Narimichi Kawabata and Peter Sheppard-Skaerved.
‘There is a special beauty in the playing of Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, supported by Daniel-Ben Pienaar’s stunning accompaniment.’ – Brass Review
‘Apart from his nimble dexterity, Freeman-Attwood's playing is just as striking for the beauty of his lyrical phrasing and his richness of colour...’ – Gramophone
